Innovation

This project promises several innovations:

1) Adapted and validated international instrument will be used to assess current level of CT skills regarding health choices among 12, 13 and 14-years old. This instrument has never been used in Poland, but it has been used or is prepared to be used in Norway, Uganda, China, Mexico and Spain. Previous research using this instrument showed its flexibility in adapting to the users' aims and populations to be studied.

2) Case studies methodology will enable us to gather and analyze data from many different sources. Considering school as a microstructure, we shall study communication, power and sociometric structures. We will also observe social practices, for example, eating habits of pupils, ways of spending free time during breaks. This will help us to confront the declarations with their realization and study hidden curriculum.

3) The project shall bring input in the critical analysis of social inequalities and exclusion through education. Moreover, we aim to reinvent Bourdieu’s sociology and innovatively implement it in the field of sociology of medicine.

4) The impact of our study shall encompass several socially important matters:

  • The results of the study will be translated into recommendations for schools and educational policymakers
  • Diagnosed ‘invisible zones’ in health education shall inspire various social actors to cooperate in order to develop more optimal strategies of educating young people about topics related to physical and mental and promoting making informed health choices
  • Increasing HC shall help with addressing inequalities
  • Increasing HC shall help with the challenge of fake news and infodemic (WHO 2020)

5) The project meets the WHO goals for the 21st Century: to improve people’s HL what should be done through engaging Governments, Civil Society, media, Community Leaders, Research and Academic Institutions. The project will investigate both the legal framework and experiences of teachers/counsellors and school nurses/hygienists who are the community leaders.
